One of the biggest storms ever to hit India has made landfall. It's battered the east of the country with winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour. Cyclone Fani struck the coast of Odeesha state at around 8am local time close to the seaside resort of Puri. The cyclone has damaged homes and toppled utility poles but as yet there are no reports of casualties. Authorities evacuated over a million people in coastal areas ahead of Fani's arrival, fearing storm surges could endanger lives.
